New law for safety of domestic helps

To improve the working condition of domestic helps in the national capital, Delhi government on Wednesday said it would soon draft a comprehensive law to regulate private placement agencies that provide them jobs.
Labour minister Gopal Rai said the bill will be drafted after consulting various stakeholders. Suggestions and inputs would be examined, considered and incorporated in a strong and comprehensive legislation which Delhi government is keen to bring out for the welfare of a large number of domestic helps.
The proposed law will include regulating the place ment agencies and working conditions, mode of payment, welfare schemes, insurance, health, safety and education of children of domestic workers.
Rai on Wednesday convened a meeting which was attended by Swati Maliwal, chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women along with other members, labour commissioner and other senior officers of the department.
The labour minister has also constituted a special committee to suggest welfare measures.
This committee is headed by Bandana Kumari, deputy speaker of legislative assembly and has members representing various NGOs working in the domestic sector.
