NEW DELHI, May 3, 2014
Demanding that funds from the ‘Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board’ be disbursed to beneficiaries, the Joint Action Committee of Construction Workers’ Unions of Delhi demonstrated outside Raj Niwas on Friday. Several construction workers participated in the demonstration to request Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to take action in order to improve the overall functioning of the Board.
Representatives from the union, who addressed the gathering, said that the Board has a fund of Rs.1,200 crore, which they allege is controlled by bureaucrats, who keep siphoning it off. “Most of the time they are engaged in developing plans to siphon off the fund in the name of distribution of cycles or pressure cookers for construction workers,” said a statement.
It added that a circular issued in February also puts conditions on construction workers that hampers the registration and annual contribution that is due to them.
