The National Platform for Domestic Workers will hold a rally at Jantar Mantar tomorrow to demand the implementation of comprehensive rights and workplace benefits to them all over India under the National Policy on Domestic Workers formulated by the labour ministry but yet to be implemented.

 National and state conveners of the organisation and domestic workers will be present at  tomorrow’s meeting.  “There is lack of decent wages given to them as well as violence, abuse and sexual harassment which also leads to trafficking and forced migration. In order to safeguard their rights, we are going to put forward the implementation of this new legislation which will include the creation of registration of workers and delivery of social security to the workers,” said Bro Varghese Theckanath, member of the organisation.

 Members of the convening committee of the domestic workers welfare body, said under the new legislation employment should be regulated, there should be better working conditions, which will include fixation of wages, child care facilities, housing, training and skill formation for the domestic help. “We will also ask the Cabinet to form a board which will take responsibility to monitor wages to domestic workers and register placement agencies with necessary details of workers and employers especially if the worker is from outside,” said Mr Subhash Bhatnagar, national convener of the group. 

The public meeting will be addressed by domestic workers from different states and the leaders of different organisations of house helpers.
